The Breath of Sparrows
for Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
So it has arrived, the news
of your departure. Last night
I dreamt I was in the house
of my mentor, as a frequent guest
who took a desk by the window.
A towering tree with red
and yellow flowers as big as hands,
the breeze slipping between each
petal finger. I went to his room
to ask the name of that tree.
He lay on his bed, resting
with eyes closed but aware
of the birds weighing down
the branches, leaves caressing
the roof. The breath of sparrows
like his own. There was no need to name
the tree, no need to name anything
at all at that moment. I bid him thanks
before leaving, my footsteps drowning
in sparrow wings.

You need to silence those who seek to expose all those dark deeds. You trust nothing but your fist, the barrel of a gun, the whisperers of deceit. You surround yourself with others who either share your fear or who fear you enough to stay in line. Those who show they have a mind of their own are easy targets for your venom. You sit on your throne of bones. You tell yourself you are just because you are mighty. You need not explain your actions. They speak for themselves.

THANK YOU, ECUADOR!
Having experienced the euphoria of EDSA 1986 in the Philippines, I can imagine the jubilation and hope now flooding the streets of Egypt. The road to freedom – true freedom, and not the one spoonfed by mass media to couchdwellers (hahahaha, new term) – will be far from smooth. May the people of Egypt find their way on their own terms and without the shadow of some other power’s hands hovering over their land.
This is just the beginning. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PEOPLE OF EGYPT!
